Newcastle Airport by Metro, rail and bus: every public transport option

Independent Newcastle Airport travel guide · not affiliated with Newcastle Airport.

The cheapest public-transport route into the city is the Tyne and Wear Metro. The Green Line runs directly from the terminal station to the city centre in about 25 minutes, and a single is capped at £2.50 on a Pop card or contactless bank card in 2026. It is a rare thing among UK airports: a rapid-transit station built right into the terminal. Prices checked August 2026.

Tyne and Wear Metro (Green Line)

Newcastle Airport is the northern terminus of the Green Line, which runs Airport to South Hylton via the city centre. The station is inside the terminal, a covered walk of a couple of minutes from arrivals with no road crossing.

A single adult journey to the city centre is capped at £2.50 using a Pop pay-as-you-go card or a contactless bank card, under the Mayor's fare cap in force from 1 April 2026 for 12 months. A paper single from the machine is about £2.80. A DaySaver day ticket costs a few pounds more if you plan several trips. You can pick up a free Pop card at the airport Metro station or order one at nexus.org.uk before you travel; a contactless bank card works and is capped the same way.

The trip to Monument or Newcastle Central Station takes about 25 minutes, direct with no changes. Trains run roughly every 12 to 15 minutes during the day, every 15 to 20 minutes in the evening, and about every 30 minutes early on Sunday mornings. First trains leave from around 05:30 on weekdays (about 06:20 on Sundays), and the last departures are around midnight.

National Rail connections

There is no separate heavy-rail station at the airport. The Metro takes you directly to Newcastle Central Station in about 25 minutes, and Central Station is itself a Metro stop, so no change is needed. From there you can pick up National Rail services (LNER, CrossCountry, TransPennine and Northern) to London, Edinburgh, York and beyond.

Buses and coaches

The airport is served by local buses to nearby suburbs such as Ponteland, Kingston Park and Callerton, but the Metro is the dominant public-transport link into the city. A budget bus option to the city runs around £2.50 for a single, taking roughly 35 to 45 minutes, though the exact route number and operator should be checked locally.

Direct scheduled coach links from the airport are limited. Most coach travellers use the city-centre coach station on John Dobson Street, which you reach from the airport by Metro.

When a taxi is worth it

The Metro is the cheapest and usually the fastest public route, but it stops running at around midnight. If you land later than that, or you have heavy luggage or a group, a pre-booked taxi or Uber is the practical choice. If someone is collecting you by car, check the drop-off options first, since two of them are free.
