Note: figures below are for Newcastle International Airport in the UK (Newcastle upon Tyne, newcastleairport.com), not the separate Newcastle Airport in New South Wales, Australia.
Terminals, construction and investment
- 20 October 2025 Newcastle Airport began a near-£60 million expansion (part of its "Masterplan 2040"), including a three-storey terminal extension with a larger departure lounge, an expanded international baggage hall with additional carousels, more seating, toilets and dining, and a new peak-time security search area that will raise processing capacity by more than 30% versus 2025. (source)
- 2026 The expansion supports a long-term goal of growing from around 5 million to about 9 million passengers a year by 2040, with the airport citing nearly 2,000 new jobs and around £900 million of extra economic contribution over 15 years. Improvements including additional baggage carousels are expected to be in place for summer 2026. (source)
New routes and airlines
- March 2026 easyJet opened (re-established) a base at Newcastle Airport, basing three aircraft, supporting around 1,200 jobs including 140 direct pilot and cabin-crew roles, and operating about 86 flights a week to 22 leisure destinations across Europe and North Africa. (source)
- Summer 2026 Newcastle announced its largest ever flight schedule with 19 new routes, including Lisbon, Porto, Nice, Palermo and Preveza, as it targeted a record of around 6 million passengers for the year. (source)
- 2026 easyJet added routes such as Nice (from March), Malta (summer), Faro (March to October), Lisbon (from 22 June) and Rome Fiumicino (from 30 March); Jet2 launched Preveza (May) and Palermo (from May); Ryanair added Brussels, Budapest, Gdansk, Malta and Wroclaw. TUI continues to operate Newcastle's longest route, a Boeing 787 service to Cancun, Mexico. (source)
Parking, drop-off and fare changes
- December 2025 Newcastle Airport scrapped its long-standing free 15-minute drop-off in the short-stay 2 car park; the Express car park now costs £5 for up to 10 minutes, £10 for up to 30 minutes and £14 for up to 45 minutes. Short Stay 2 remains free for up to 15 minutes, and the Callerton Parkway waiting zone is free for up to 90 minutes. (source)
- From March 2026 Cash is no longer accepted at the car park exit barriers; payment is by credit or debit card, though designated cash payment machines remain available. (source)
- Ahead of 2026 Newcastle opened a free Waiting Zone for taxis and the public as part of its parking and access changes. (source)
Security rules (liquids and electronics)
- 2026 Newcastle still enforces the 100ml liquids rule and the clear-bag requirement, and laptops must still be removed at security. Newcastle had not yet switched to the next-generation CT scanners that allow up to 2 litres per container and laptops left in bags (a change made at Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham and Edinburgh in early 2026). Travellers should assume the 100ml rule applies at Newcastle. (source)
Passenger records and milestones
- Q1 2026 Newcastle was named the fastest-growing of the UK's 15 largest airports in the first quarter of 2026 (around +9%), according to Civil Aviation Authority data, driven by continued airline investment (easyJet base, plus new Jet2 and Ryanair routes). (source)
- 2026 The airport forecast 2026 to be the busiest year in its history, expecting a record of around 6 million passengers, and reported a record-breaking May half-term.
