How do you get from Newcastle Airport to Newcastle city centre by Metro?

Independent Newcastle Airport travel guide · not affiliated with Newcastle Airport.

The Tyne and Wear Metro runs directly from a station inside Newcastle Airport's terminal to the city centre in around 25 minutes, with no changes needed. A single fare is capped at £2.50 on a Pop card or contactless payment. Checked August 2026.

Where the station is

Newcastle Airport is one of the few UK airports with a rapid-transit station built into the terminal. From arrivals, turn left as you exit and follow the signs. It is around a five-minute covered walk with no road to cross, so you do not need to factor in a shuttle bus or a long trek across a car park. The airport station is the northern terminus of the Green Line, so every train that arrives there is heading into the city.

Which line, and where it goes

The Green Line runs from Newcastle Airport through the city centre to South Hylton. You do not need to check the destination board too carefully at the airport station itself, since every departure is southbound towards the city. Newcastle Central Station, useful if you are connecting onward by National Rail to London, Edinburgh, York or elsewhere, is on the same line, so there is no need to change trains. Monument, in the heart of the shopping district, is a couple of stops further on.

Fares: £2.50 capped, or £2.80 on paper

A single adult journey from the airport to the city centre is capped at £2.50 if you tap a Pop pay-as-you-go card or a contactless bank card. This cap comes from the Mayor's fare cap, in force from 1 April 2026 for 12 months, and it applies across all zones on the Metro network. If you buy a paper single from the ticket machine instead, it costs about £2.80. A DaySaver or day ticket, useful if you plan to use the Metro more than once, costs a few pounds more than a single.

Ticket typePrice
Pop card or contactless (single)£2.50
Paper single from the machineabout £2.80
DaySaver / day ticketa few pounds more than a single

A Pop card is free. You can pick one up at the airport Metro station itself, or order one in advance at nexus.org.uk before you travel. If you would rather not bother with a card, a contactless bank card is capped at exactly the same £2.50 fare, so there is no financial reason to get one unless you plan to top it up and reuse it on future trips.

How often trains run, and the first and last departures

During the day, trains on the Green Line run roughly every 12 to 15 minutes. In the evenings this drops to about every 15 to 20 minutes, and on Sunday mornings, trains are spaced roughly every 30 minutes. The first trains of the day leave the airport from around 05:30 on weekdays, and about 06:20 on Sundays. The last departures are around midnight, which matters if you are flying in late: after that, your options are a pre-booked taxi through Arrow Cars, or Uber and Bolt.

What 25 minutes actually gets you

In around 25 minutes from the airport station, the Metro takes you directly to Monument and Newcastle Central Station, with no changes. That is genuinely quick for an airport-to-city connection by UK standards, and it beats driving into the city centre at most times of day once you account for parking. If you are heading further afield in the North East, such as Sunderland or Durham, you will usually still change onto a bus, taxi or National Rail service once you reach the city, so check the routes page for those onward journeys.

When the Metro is not the right choice

The Metro is hard to beat if you are travelling solo or as a couple with a manageable amount of luggage. It becomes less convenient if you have a lot of bags, if you are travelling as a larger group where per-head taxi costs even out, or if you land after the last train around midnight. In those cases, a pre-booked taxi from Arrow Cars, or Uber and Bolt from the airport's short-stay pick-up point, is the more practical option. Full fares and how booking works are on the taxis page. If you are being met by car instead, Newcastle also has two genuinely free waiting options rather than a single paid drop-off, covered on the drop-off and pick-up page.
